Jack, one of our SUNY University at Buffalo Exercise Science Intersnhip students, reflects on the Spring 2024 semester internship with TrainSMART Personal Fitness. Here is what he has to say:
My name is Jack Davis and I completed my senior year 480 hour internship here at TrainSMART. I would strongly recommend choosing TrainSMART as a internship site if you are going into practicum, or the 480 hour internship. I had a great experience here. And three of my top reasons to choose TrainSMART include there's an unlimited opportunity to learn. We are provided with a curriculum, and every week we are provided with articles and videos that really help teach and understand certain exercises, principles, and they're just... It has a lot of really useful information that can help you in your career. And we have guest speakers come in that include physical therapists, chiropractors, and doctors. And being able to learn from so many different people that are so highly educated is very helpful. Second reason I would say is the resources and connections you can build here. So this during this internship, I was provided with two different textbooks, as well as I was provided with a paid Certified Functional Strength Coach certification. TrainSMART paid for me to get certified and I took the test. And I'm very grateful to now be a certified strength coach, as well as being able to receive textbooks which have helped me so much and learning new information. And the third and biggest reason is you get hands on experience working here. There's a practical exam, you must pass in order to train clients, which I took on the third or fourth week. So I've been training clients one on one or multiple clients at once for about the last 12 weeks straight. And being able to do that and get that hands on experience of actually working with clients has been great. It's been invaluable. Five things I won't forget are the importance of core training and the impact that it has on back pain. And building a strong and functional core functions to stabilize the spine and eliminate painful micro movements that often plague most people's lives. The second is glute training, most people have what we call glue amnesia. And when you can't properly activate your glutes and utilize them, this puts a lot more stress on back and inhibits overall sport and athletic performance. The third thing that I will take away and use for my career is the idea of the body movement patterns including upper body push and pull, as well as lower body push and pull with carries and core training. Since switching up my training to the style, I not only feel better, but I'm seeing improvements still. And really just training the way the body was meant to move and train. The fourth is you are only limited by your knowledge biomechanics. That's something that a lot of people here like to say. And I strongly agree with that. If you understand biomechanics and how the body was made to move, you can really play around with exercises and make exercises very specific to each person. There is no bad exercise, there's just better or worse for certain scenarios. And by having a deep understanding of biomechanics, it can help dictate which exercise you're going to go with. And the last, biggest thing that I will be taking with me is the importance of building relationships and connecting with people. When you have a client that you are able to connect with and formed a relationship with the training sessions just go much better. They're much smoother, they're much more enjoyable, the client has more fun and you have more fun. And it's really important to just try and build those relationships with people as it drastically affects the outcome. But I would strongly recommend TrainSMART to any students are looking for internship or practicum sites. And now I would like to give a thanks to Joe Fox and the rest of the transplant staff. The information that I've learned here and the experience I've gained has been invaluable. And I'm, I'm really going to take it with me in my career. I'd like to thank all of you for all the help that you've given me.
