Karam, one of our SUNY University at Buffalo Exercise Science Intersnhip students, reflects on the Spring 2024 semester internship with TrainSMART Personal Fitness. Here is what he has to say:
Hello, everyone. I'm one of the student interns here at TrainSMART in Buffalo, New York. And I'm graduating this semester from UB spring 2024. This is my last semester in exercise science. And I really wanted to take a minute just to thank everyone here at TrainSMART from the owner, Mr. Joe Fox, to the co owner, Dr. Brandon Mancuso, to really everyone who was involved here at TrainSMART, all of the coaches involved. Everyone's been so great to us, they've been very generous in treating us and developing our knowledge and setting our foot into the right direction. And I'm really going to be grateful for them for the rest of my life. And it's really crazy how 15 weeks really go by real quick when you're around good people and when you're around family. And this is how I felt here at TrainSMART honestly. I know I don't have a lot of time, but I want to go over a couple of things here that were very beneficial for my career here at TrainSMART and my future career after. So one of the one of the things that I think is very important and to develop before graduating, or even after graduating, is communication skills and how to really set the note and how to really get, get the word out there to the people around you and spread knowledge in the right way. And I think TrainSMART really helped me out with every single part of communication factors and personal training and in the, in the sports performance world, I should say. And another thing also is how they helped us to learn all the top exercises that will be very beneficial for clients doing functional strength trainingo. How to move the body as a whole and how to, how to think functionally rather than being power lifters or bodybuilders or focus on, on each muscle. Here at TrainSMART, we learned how to focus on the body as a whole. And another thing is progressions and regressions of exercises, how to progress and regress each exercise and the importance of progressions and regressions to the whole population. They really taught us the importance of functional movement, as I said, and how to focus on the body as one unit and always train full body rather than separate the muscles and think about it in a bodybuilding way. I want to say the most important thing that you learn here also is how the body works as a whole unit because of its anatomy and physiology. And really the importance of things like the core, which we do learn at school but not that we don't focus on it like, like we focused on it here and TrainSMART and how the core unites the spine, the vertebra and how the core really is like a is like a support system, a shield, a wire system to the spine and how to really maintain a healthy spine and develop healthier muscles with time also. I I do have a lot of different things I wanted to go over here but unfortunately I won't have enough time for that but three reasons for anyone to join TrainSMART I think is that you'll be able to get more hands on experience. You'll be able to interact with clients since day one. Almost since, since day one. The hands on experience comes later on in your internship when you develop that mentality of training when you work on the top exercises for TrainSMART. When you when they know you were you are ready to go out there and train the clients. Another thing is that you will gain a certification as soon as you start in functional strength training which I think is very, very helpful and beneficial for your resume, no matter which degree you were pursuing. It's also very helpful and beneficial for your own good. And another thing I think is has that has been great hear at TrainSMART is the fact that they dedicate their time and your time to learning from workshops and more experienced doctors, physical therapists in the field, strength coaches, and experience the learners and, and strength and conditioning, functional strength training, anatomy and physiology. And I think this was very beneficial for my career as those workshops have helped with developing better knowledge then what we just got from school and its own. And I thank, thanks to TrainSMART, and everyone here at TrainSMART. This semester has been the absolutely like, best semester I've ever been through and I will, I will really miss those times. And I look back to those days and think about how we really grew in 15 weeks and how we really gained super beneficial knowledge for our future. Thank you so much.
