Social media presence isn't an indicator of how great a coach is. Conor McNally shares what he thinks about the best coaches he follows.
I think the coaches that I follow the most, and not to say that I don’t have a ton of respect for coaches that put stuff out on social media, but I will tell you this much: Some of the best coaches that I have been fortunate enough to know are so busy coaching, that they don’t have time to create a social media presence. And I know there’s a ton of great coaches that put stuff up on Twitter and Instagram and all that, but a guy that comes to mind for me is a gentleman I worked for at Wofford College, a small little school in South Carolina. His name is Josh Medler. Josh is probably a name that nobody on this call has ever heard of and will probably never know, but when I watch him coach, when I watch him run a room and coach guys on 12 platforms, they’re just watching him operate and how he goes about it, how he writes his programs, how he carries himself on the floor, the command in his voice, those are things you might not see in social media, but I know when I watch him in person, that’s a dude I want to go learn from. That’s a guy I want to ask questions to. I want to see like “hey man, how did you get to be like that?”
Because at the end of the day, your perception on social media is important I suppose, but the most important thing is the result you get from your athletes, the relationship you have with your athletes. So I look at a guy like that and he doesn’t have a big social media presence, but I know how he trains his athletes, and I know the influence he has on them. So those are the coaches that I want to learn from the most.
