ELDOA, a French acronym that translates to LOADS in English, was designed by Osteopath Dr. Guy Voyer. LOADS stands for Longitudinal Osteo-Articular Decoaptation Stretching. This method is a series of exercises designed to improve posture, decompress the spine, and promote overall musculoskeletal health. ELDOA exercises involve specific postures and stretches targeting individual vertebral segments. The goal of ELDOA is to create spinal decompression at different vertebral levels, improve spinal alignment, mobility in restricted joints, and overall spinal health. This helps improve muscle function, range of motion, and relieves pain. The ELDOA method also increases overall resilience against injuries, making it beneficial for a wide range of individuals. ELDOA is a type of myofascial stretch specifically designed to target and relax fascia, which is the connective tissue surrounding the muscles. By doing those ELDOA exercises, you will stretch and normalize the function and length of the fascia.
Fighting gravity and the effect of inactivity is a lifelong struggle. Our daily routines often lead to bad posture, which could affect how we move and workout without pain or injury. ELDOA offers a set of taught, self-applied postural exercises aimed to enhance how your joints function. The exercises associated with ELDOA include myofascial stretches to almost all the joints of the body. The aim is to maintain and develop healthier joints for our clients starting from the ankle all the way to the neck and shoulders. Performing ELDOA exercises on the main joints of the body will positively impact the linkages to the addressed joint. For example, improving ankle mobility will positively impact the knee and hip function during squatting movements. Having more range of motion at the ankle will allow for more flexion at the knee and hips. Furthermore, the ELDOA exercises include stretches for crucial joints like L4/L5 in the Lumbar spine or L5/S1, disc herniations in those joints are more common than any other joint in the spine. Our spine is crucial, but can face issues like pain, arthritis, and nerve block problems due to compression of the vertebrae. Individuals with low back pain and disc herniations could do those stretches to help alleviate their pain and help with their herniations. ELDOA exercises also help healthy individuals maintain a healthy spine by preserving an optimal space between the vertebrae, hydrate the intervertebral discs for better health, improve mobility, awareness, and coordination of the entire spinal unit.
ELDOA incorporates myofascial stretches which help to alleviate spinal compressions, improve overall musculoskeletal health, and improve overall joint health. Some videos will be included below to demonstrate effective “movement snack” exercises for our clients to help them with their activities of daily living. At TrainSMART Personal Fitness, “movement snacks” are prescribed as quick exercises that clients can do on their own throughout the day. Check out this blog "The Importance of Movement Snacks" for more information. It would be most beneficial to perform the ELDOA exercises immediately post-workout while the body is warm, or before going to bed.
“Each ELDOA is a one-minute posture exercise designed to give space to the targeted joint by putting specific fascial chains under tension. Since patients use their own muscle contractions to perform ELDOA, it is an active form of decompression, not passive.”[1]
In summary, the ELDOA method offers valuable benefits for musculoskeletal health and movement, maintains a healthy spine, helps individuals with disc herniations or low back pain, and improves the body's resiliency to injuries. Depending on the individual’s needs and goals, the ELDOA method is beneficial to anyone looking to maintain or regain a healthy spine and joints.
Please Note: If you have any musculoskeletal issues, consult with your medical professional for a second opinion before performing any of these exercises.
Helps warm up the nervous system, preparing the body for the other ELDOA exercises. The general ELDOA helps with mobility and rotational stability. It is also the only dynamic or moving ELDOA.
HOW?
A transition joint from the mid back to the lower back, very important joint for rotation. Plays a role in supporting the upper body and the facilitation of movements between the thoracic (mid back) and lumbar (lower) vertebral segments.
HOW?
Micro-opening of the posterior part of the hip joint. Working on mobility of the hip joint while sparing the spine. Works on optimal pelvic alignment and mobility, crucial for postural alignment and prevents low back pain.
HOW?
The GH joint also known as the shoulder joint provides the largest range of motion as a joint in the body and it's crucial to develop more stability of the muscles to that joint to keep it healthy and functioning as it's supposed to be.
HOW?
The lumbosacral joint, crucial for the transfer of weight from the upper body to the pelvis and lower extremities. We need proper alignment and function in this area of the body which is optimal to reduce low back pain, facilitate proper movement and act as a shock absorber.
HOW?
Apex of the thoracic spine, contributes to trunk stabilization, movement coordination and respiratory function.
