Either way you say it they are delicious and nutritious. Avocados went from a niche market to a ‘superfood’ back in about 2011/2012. There are various brands, with the Haas avocado from Mexico getting most of the star treatment for the high oil content. High oil content in an avocado equals more flavor. I have found that avocado lovers just can’t get enough. It seems to be somewhat of an obsession, so I would love to hear from you with your favorite avocado recipe. Come-on people, help me out! Recently someone asked me about the health benefits of the avocado seed. I really had no idea so I began to research it and found that the seeds are a good source of potassium BUT to get that benefit you really need an avocado that isn’t ripe. Ummm, who wants unripened avocados and for what? Many sites online say the benefits may consist of the seed portion having a high level of most of the fruits antioxidants, anti-tumor properties and was used as a traditional treatment for diarrhea and dysentery by Native Americans. According to the California Avocado Commission, “As stated in a 2013 research study by Pennsylvania State University, “although the currently available data is promising, for most indications, it remains very preliminary and further studies are needed” and “In addition, the safety of the various extracts of the avocado seeds must be assessed in order to more fully estimate the usefulness of this resource”, and they state “it is not recommended to eat the seeds”. If you do want to try out the seed (no matter what I say) because you believe it has great benefits or just because you want to, please be sure you cut or smash it into little pieces before adding it to your very powerful blender. I would hate for anyone to break their blender over an experiment with avocado seed. So, what are the benefits to avocados? – besides the creamy taste, versatility, and easy use - they are high in omega 3 fatty acids (the good ones), have many of the good for you vitamins and minerals, fiber (which helps with digestion and elimination), and potassium. I like avocado sliced as a side dish to a meal, drizzled with lime or lemon, olive oil and a touch of sea salt. Sometimes easy is the best! They really are so versatile. Use in your health shake, in a salad, in a sandwich. You can even use it as a facial mask.
